A serious crash involving a bus carrying players from Monarch Football Club has occurred in the Kwahu Mountains.
The accident took place in the early hours of Saturday, August 24, 2024, affecting approximately 60 children and officials from the Ada-based Monarch Football Club.
The bus was returning from a weeklong football tournament held in Obo Kwahu, where 32 teams had competed.
The crash happened around 3:30 a.m. in the Kwahu area of the Eastern Region. It has been reported that brake failure was the cause of the accident, occurring while the bus was descending the steep and winding Kwahu Mountain on its way to Nkawkaw.
As the brakes failed, the bus began to sway uncontrollably, leading to a frightening descent. The fully loaded bus eventually overturned after swaying from side to side.
One of the survivors, who was among those transported to the hospital for treatment, shared the distressing experience with Agoo FM. The survivor described the harrowing events that led up to the crash, highlighting the severity of the situation faced by those on board.
“We came to participate in the 32-club tournament at Kwahu Obo and were heading back to Ada. The bus started swaying from left to right until it eventually overturned. Our team is called Monarch,” the survivor said.
Emergency response teams, including the Fire Service and Police, swiftly arrived at the scene to provide assistance.
They worked to rescue injured footballers and officials, and recover the bodies of those who were feared to have lost their lives in the tragic incident.
As investigations into the cause of the accident continue, the community and the football fraternity are anxiously awaiting updates on the condition of the injured and the overall toll of the crash.
