IT HAS been reported that motorbike knockdowns are the lead cause of road accident deaths in the Ashanti Region during the last two years (2019 and 2020).
Police 2019 statistics on reported cases of road accident deaths indicated that 409 people died through accidents and 244 of them were through motorbike knockdowns.
During the same period under discussion, from January to December 10, 2020, 518 people lost their lives through accidents and 306 were knocked down by motorbikes.
The Ashanti Regional Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) Commander, Chief Supt. Emmanuel Aduboahene, openly lamented over the alarming statistics.
According to him “this record shows that the people in the Ashanti Region are vulnerable to motorbike knockdowns and it is about time something was done stop the deaths”.
The Police Capo admonished motorbike riders to be very circumspect and also respect all road traffic regulations at all times in order to stop the preventable knockdowns.
Speaking on Akoma FM in Kumasi, Chief Supt. Aduboahene said the there was an increase in the number of vehicles that were involved in accidents from 2019 to 2020.
“From January to December 10, 2019, we recorded 2974 total number of accidents in the region and this year it has jumped to 3137 cases during the same period”, he said.
According to him, the increase in the number of reported cases of road accidents was not the best, considering the fact that Covid-19 at a point reduced road activities.
“This year, because of the outbreak of the deadly Covid-19, at a point we were under lockdown so it is not good that the number of road accidents has still increased”, he bemoaned.
