The government of Ghana has imposed a 6:00pm to 6:00am curfew on the Bole Township and its environs in the Bole District of the Northern Region, following a bloody clash in the area on Monday.
It has also banned residents from carrying ammunition or offensive weapons with a threat of prosecution if they fail to adhere to the order.
This comes after the fight between supporters of two individuals of the same royal family who have laid competing claims over the Bole skin. It sparked Monday morning after an attempted parallel enskinment by both factions.
Tensions began to gather on Friday night as the funeral rites of the late Bolewura was being performed. There were reports of a mass arrival of armed men (warriors) from Damongo and Busunu. Shortly after their arrival, the report said, several gunshots were heard from the directions of the rival chiefs.
A statement signed by the Interior Minister Ambrose Dery announcing the curfew said the decision was taken on the advice of the Northern Regional Security Council and that it takes effect 6:00pm to 6 am effective, Monday 10 December, 2018.
“The imposition of the curfew follows the outbreak of violence in the town arising from the Bole Chieftaincy dispute,” the statement said.
“There is a total ban on all persons in the aforementioned communities and its environs from carrying arms, ammunition or any offensive weapon, and any persons found with any arms or ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted,” it added.
