President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has selected Nalerigu as the regional capital for the newly-created North East region.
Speaking during the Presentation of the Constitutional Instrument (C.I.) 116 for the creation of the North East region at the Jubilee House in Accra on Tuesday, 12 February 2019, Mr Akufo-Addo said: “Nalerigu has been chosen as the capital of the North East region.”
He further assured that “government projects and structures will be equitably spread across the region.”
“Government will make sure that the desire for growth and progress, which was the underlining reason for the vote for the creation of the North East Region is met,” the President added.
The exercise was undertaken through the public presentation of Constitutional Instruments backing the creation of the regions.
This comes after residents within the catchment areas of the proposed new regions voted to give an overwhelming endorsement for their creation in a referendum in December 2018.
Accordingly, the new – Oti, Bono East, Western North, Ahafo, Savannah, North East regions – were created.
