Nana Addo government better than Nkrumah’s government – Napo
Minister for Education Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh believes the President Akufo-Addo led government can be said to have performed better than the administration of Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
The Member of Parliament for Manhyia South in the Ashanti Region made this remarks on Thursday during a ceremony to hand over some school buses to some selected Senior High Schools across the country.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister of Education touted the government’s Free SHS Programme as one of their major achievements of the NPP in the educational sector. He therefore recalled how the programme which has fairly been successful received a number of oppositions when the idea was conceived by the NPP who were then in opposition.
He again reiterated how a number of campaigns were launched against the policy and how prominent persons in the NDC at the time claimed the policy was not feasible and if it was, Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah would have implemented it.
According to him, since the Akufo-Addo led government has been able to successfully implement the Free SHS Programme, it won’t be out of place for one to argue that the NPP government is far better than the administration of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in terms of performance.
“When the government took office in 2017, it has made education it’s top priority. His Excellency the president did not want to be president of activities, a president of words, a president of rhetorics or president of propaganda. He charged those us he has appointed us ministers to concentrate on only one thing but to deliver on our promises,” he narrated.
The legislator therefore concluded that “this nation has witnessed the Free Senior High School Project. I do recall the 47 adverts that were made to undermine the Free Senior School Programme in 2012. I do recall a famous statement that if free SHS was doable, Nkrumah would have done it. Can I also then say, since H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has delivered the Free SHS, his government is probably better than Nkrumah’s government.”
