DR. MATTHEW Opoku Prempeh, the Energy Minister, was the toast of a gathering at the Great Hall at the KNUST in Kumasi, yesterday.
Nicknamed in political circles as ‘Napo’, he purchased a copy of a book, titled the ‘History of Asante’ at a colossal amount of Gh 200,000.
The book was being launched as part of activities marking the 150 years of the Sagrenti war and Otumfuo’s 25 years on the revered Golden Stool.
Dr. Prempeh, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia South Constituency, is a grandson of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
His decision to buy a copy of the book at that staggering amount did not surprise many as he is noted for actively supporting Otumfuo’s activities.
Dignitaries at the programme weee seen applauding Napo, especially when it was announced that he was buying a copy of the book at the staggering price.
The book launch was graced by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who returned from South Africa over the weekend and other dignitaries.
The occupant of Silver Stool of Asanteman, Daasebre Osei Bonsu, the Asante Mamponghene and Nana Otuo Serebuo, Juabenhene were there.
Other prominent traditional leaders in Asanteman, politicians, businessmen, the clergy and people from all walks of life also grace the memorable occasion.
Significantly, the book captured and explain all that one needs to know about the Asante kingdom, which has been existence for close to four centuries.
