FOR THE second time in just two months, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh II, the Energy Minister, has been honoured with a doctorate degree for his yeoman’s work in promoting quality education.
Nicknamed as ‘Napo’ in the political circles, he was on Saturday conferred with an Honourary Doctor of Humane Letters (DHL) by the University of Professional Studies (UPSA) in Accra, last Saturday.
Napo, who is the immediate-past Education Minister, had also in May 2021 been honoured with similar Doctorate Degree by the University of Education, Winneba, in the Central Region, for his positive works.
The two prestigious awards, significantly, were in recognition of Napo’s extraordinary works and his exemplary leadership style in the education ministry, which changed the face of Ghana’s education.
Napo Thrills Bawumia
The Vice President, Alhaji Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, who was the guest of honour for Saturday’s event, stated categorically that the entire country and its citizenry were impressed about Napo’s positive output.
According to him, Napo as education minister, exhibited unique leadership style and determination, as against all odds, he was able to successfully introduced the famous free Senior High School (SHS) policy.
Dr. Bawumia said the entire world has seen Napo’s accomplishments in the education ministry, recounting that even the United Nation’s (UN) has recognized his good works and duly honoured Napo, recently.
He stated that “Today’s award shows the high regard that people have for Napo, especially due to his roles in helping to promote quality education in our country”, adding that Napo’s achievements are overwhelming.
Dr. Bawumia therefore commended the leadership of UPSA for having the vision to honour Napo for his efforts to improve quality education, noting that he was indeed thrilled by Napo’s positive outlook, so far.
Top dignitaries in society including the Otumfuo Apagyahene, Oheneba Owusu Afriyie, Kumasi Urban Roads Director, Ing Nana Poku Agyeman and chiefs, just to mention a few, graced the big occasion.
Napo Shows Appreciation
Napo, who looked cheerful, in his speech, attributed his extraordinary works at the Education Ministry, especially the introduction of the free SHS policy in a record seven months time, to the the help of God.
A staunch Christian, the Energy Minister, who doubles as MP for Manhyia South, said “God has been his pillar” throughout his life and political career, adding that his staff at education ministry also deserve thanks.
Napo also stated that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who appointed him as a minister in his New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration to serve his country, deserves the greatest thanks and applause.
The Energy Minister commended the UPSA for honouring him with a doctorate degree and assured that the awards he had been receiving from academic institutions lately, would ginger him to do more for mother Ghana.
