DR. MATTHEW Opoku Prempeh aka ‘Napo’ has posthumously honoured the late Asantehemaa, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II.
He has named an ultramodern library project at Ashtown in the Manhyia South Constituency after the great Asante Queen, who died in late 2016.
The deceased Asantehemaa was the mother of the reigning Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and the Nana Ama Konadu III, the Asantehemaa.
Significantly, Nana Ama Konadu III officially cut the tape to open the edifice with support from Napo and other top dignitaries present on Sunday.
The library has a 200 capacity, 10,000 books, 36 computers, Internet Assess, Digital Library and other amenities to aid teaching and learning.
Napo, in his address, lauded Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II for her significant contributions to Asanteman and Ghana in general during her reign.
He explained that the late Asante Queen particularly helped to promote education in the country so he decided to name the beautiful library after her.
The Manhyia South MP said GETFUND and MPs Common Fund was used to construct the library, urging the youth in the area to make good use of the library.
Hayford Siaw, the Executive Director, Ghana Library Authority (GLA), lauded Napo for his contributions to the growth of education, especially the GLA.
He said a total of 50 new library projects have been constructed nationwide during the last three years, praising Napo for the positive development.
Siaw said a total of 61 libraries were constructed since the GLA started operations in 1950 “and 50 libraries have been constructed during the last three years.
“This sudden increase in library projects in the state have been made possible following Napo’s extraordinary works when he was the Minister of Education”.
He said the number of libraries in the country have jumped from 61 to 111, and books in the library shelves has also increased from 400,000 to 1.2 million now.
Siaw stated that “these are some of the extraordinary works of Napo when he was the Minister of Education and the GLA and Ghanaians are grateful to him”.
Ofosu Frimpong, the Ashanti Regional Director, Ghana Library Authority, said Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II deserved to be honoured to by Napo.
Nana Owusu Afriyie, the Otumfuo Apagyahene, Nana Kwaku Duah, Kokosohene, Prof. Opoku Amankwa, GES Director General and others were there.
Other dignitaries present were Ing Nana Poku Agyeman, the Kumasi Urban Roads Director, GES Deputy Director General, Dr. Kwabena Tandoh were present.
