National Cathedral is Important – Joe Mettle
Award winning Ghanaian gospel artiste, Joe Mettle, has stated that building a national cathedral is important.
His comment follows concerns raised by some Ghanaians that the nation does not need a national cathedral after the President Akufo-Addo announced government’s decision to build the national cathedral.
The National Cathedral of Ghana is a planned interdenominational Christian cathedral scheduled to be built in Accra, the nation’s capital, as part of Ghana‘s 60th anniversary celebrations.
The design for the cathedral was unveiled by the President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, in March 2018.
The cathedral will have an auditorium capable of seating 5,000 as well as the requisite chapels, and a baptistery. The site will also house a music school, an art gallery, and a museum dedicated to the Bible.
Despite insistence by government that the facility will not be funded by the taxpayer, many Ghanaians, including Christians have described the move as misplaced priority.
Speaking to Berla Mundi and Giovanni Caleb on Starr Drive, the ‘Bo noo ni’ hitmaker said, “we still struggle getting halls to do events because most of our halls are too small,” adding “we need a bigger hall that can accommodate some of our events and even some of the national gatherings.”
According to Mettle, claims that the country needs more hospitals and ambulances instead of a national cathedral are legitimate but “but then if there is a pressing one, then we should tackle that first.”
