Former National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Sammi Awuku has revealed why the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has intensified its attacks on newly elected flag-bearer of the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Mr. Awuku, a representative of the National Council of the NPP from the Eastern Region, explained that anxiety and fear enveloped the NDC after Vice President Bawumia was elected to lead the NPP to the2024 general elections as he is a clear political treat.
“The NDC has three strongholds in any election: the Volta Region, the North, and the Zongo communities. These strongholds play a crucial role in securing victory for the NDC if they win them convincingly. There is no political maneuvering that can convince the NPP that we can win the Volta Region in 2024, but we are confident of making significant progress in this region”, Mr. Awuku noted.
According to him, Dr. Bawumia’s impact in the North and the Zongos cannot be downplayed.
He added: “In the North and the Zongos, Dr. Bawumia has posed a formidable challenge to the NDC since entering mainstream politics. We have not only equaled the number of parliamentary seats in the North held by the NDC but also secured an additional seat, giving us the lead.
“Moreover, for the first time, the Zongos believe that one of their own is leading the NPP, and they are eager to declare their overwhelming support and votes for Dr. Bawumia.”
Recognizing the importance of not relying solely on one’s own strongholds for electoral victory, Lawyer Awuku emphasized the strategy of making inroads into the opponent’s strongholds while retaining support in their own, and appealing to swing voters.
He stated, “In Ghana, it’s crucial to make headway into your opponent’s strongholds while keeping your own, and attracting undecided voters, to ensure a decisive win in elections. This is the primary focus of Dr. Bawumia and his campaign team.”
Meanwhile, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, on Monday, 6 November 2023, received a rousing welcome at the Jubilee House in Accra, following his victory in the NPP Presidential Primaries last Saturday.
This came as a surprise as he was met at the entrance of his reception by Dr Augustine Blay (Executive Secretary to the Vice President), who ushered him to a line-up of his staff, and some of his supporters, clothed in white apparel to celebrate his victory in the 2023 NPP presidential candidate contest held on Saturday, 4 November 2023.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Augustine Blay, who doubles as the head of the Digital Campaign team said, “…standing here today, we have the flag-bearer of the NPP, some said it was not possible but today by the grace of God, it is possible
“So we have here our beloved Vice President, we love him so much, we love him so much, we love him so much”.
He expressed the joy in the hearts of the people gathered, as well as their well wishes to him in the upcoming general elections saying, “We are so happy to see you to be elected as the flag-bearer of the NPP, we know, and we believe with you, we shall win the December 2024 elections”.
Dr. Bawumia praised his team heads and the entire team for working hard to meet his expectations; and urged them to keep up with the magnificent work to break the eight in the upcoming general elections.
