A GROUP of stoutly-built men, said to be members of the ‘Hawks’, a vigilante group in the National Democratic Congress (NDC), nearly marred the funeral of Alhaji Mumin Ayayie, the late Gonja Chief of Kumasi, on Sunday.
But for the timely intervention of scores fully-armed military men at the funeral, one Alhaji Abouba, the Manhyia South Constituency Organizer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), would have been lynched by the deadly group.
The unpleasant incident, which could have blemished the funeral rites of the respected late Gonja Chief, happened right in the presence of ex-President John Dramani Mahama, who was also seated on the dais.
It all started when Alhaji Abouba accused the NDC Member of Parliament (MP) for Asawase Constituency, Hon. Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, of inciting some NDC youth to make noise at the funeral.
The youth reportedly started shouting immediately the MCE for Asokre Mampong, Alhaji Alidu Seidu, attempted to announce the NPPs gift for the bereaved family.
“I therefore attempted to snatch the microphone from Hon. Muntaka’s hands so that he would stop inciting the NDC youth, and that was when the NDC macho men attacked me but I was saved by the soldiers”, he said.
