The founder and leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Mr. Akwasi Addai, affectionately called ‘Odike’, has predicted that the National Democratic Congress (NDC), could lose massive votes in the Ashanti region, following the verbal attacks by some leaders of the party at the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
The UPP leader, who noted that Otumfuo controls whatever goes on in the region, said the attacks hurled at the Asantehene would be considered as an attack against every Asante native, whether in the region or residing elsewhere.
Odike’s comments come after some leading members of the NDC had described the Asante Monarch as a liar.
It will be recalled that, Otumfuo, whilst addressing the recent United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York, said he had to persuade former President John Dramani Mahama before he (Mahama) accepted the outcome of the 2016 general elections.
Following that revelation, some top members of the NDC, including the former Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah and Omane Boamah (a former Minister of Communication), reportedly described the Asantehene as a liar.
Odike, who said he believed what Otumfuo said at the UN (because the Asantehene had over the years worked behind the scenes to help sustain and improve the country’s democracy), wondered why the two NDC officials would stoop so low as to talk against a highly respected and revered personality like the Asantehene.
He said the NDCs electoral performance in the Ashanti region would definitely suffer as a result.
“Manhyia Palace is the conflict resolution headquarters in Ghana, and that is an undeniable fact. Otumfuo is the pillar behind Ghana’s peace and unity”, he stressed.
