About sixty members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), on Tuesday, converged at the forecourt of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), after hours of demonstration against the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Felix Mensah Nii-Annang La.
The demonstrators, all clad in red, marched from Tema Newtown to the TMA premises, where their leadership presented their petition to Ali Amidu, TMA Head of Planning, on behalf of the MCE.
On December 4 when President Akufo-Addo visited Tema Newtown, during his regional tours, broke ground to commence an asphalt overlay of some major roads in Tema Newtown.
Additionally, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tema East, Titus Glover, said he had lobbied the Ghana National Petroleum Company (GNPC) to upgrade the 49-year-old Health Centre of Tema Newtown to a hospital status, for which land had been secured.
However, the NDC youth, who said they would not swallow the President’s promise hook, line and sinker, took to the streets.
At Tema Newtown, the demonstrators petitioned the Tema Traditional Council (TTC) on the filth in and around the Chemu Lagoon and then marched to the Tema Manhean Health Centre, which, according to officials, is dire for rehabilitation.
Another reason for which the demonstrators hit the streets was to push the TMA to restore non-functioning streetlights in the area.
At the main gate of TMA, a representative of the group, Okoe Oninku Henry, said they were venting their anger at the MCE because he had continuously failed to fulfill his promises to meet their infrastructural needs.
He said the MP and MCE, both of whom hail from Tema Manhean, had failed to lobby for developments for the area, except donating some foodstuffs, drinks and cash to some heads of clans on festive occasions.
“We want the MCE himself to come and receive our petition so that he will see how our eyes are bloodshot with anger…bring us the MCE,” Okoe said, charging the crowd to sing profane songs at the MCE.
Police personnel drawn from the Tema Regional Command were on duty to ensure that sanity prevailed throughout the walk.
