Netizens call out John Dumelo on LGBTQ bill stance

John Dumelo’s recent remarks have sparked controversy on social media platforms such as X (formerly Twitter).

Some users criticizing the actor and aspiring parliamentarian for not having strong beliefs about the current issue.

Regarding the controversial “Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill,” commonly known as the “anti-gay bill,” Dumelo commented in an interview with Starr FM’s Bola Ray.

He stated that he aligns with the position of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), emphasizing the party’s support for the bill as a means of protecting “family values” in Ghana.

However, Dumelo declined to express a personal stance on the matter, citing respect for individuals’ privacy.

One user, identified as @JudeOnTwitt3r, described Dumelo as “confused,” suggesting that he cannot simultaneously pursue a political career while also advocating for progressive values.

Others referenced Dumelo’s past role in the 2010 Nigerian film “Men In Love,” where he portrayed a gay character, noting how this could potentially conflict with the provisions of the anti-gay bill currently under consideration by Ghana’s Parliament.

Critics find it ironic that Dumelo acted in the movie, as it could get him into trouble with the law if the new rules pass.

Additionally, some users have remarked on how both Dumelo and another actor, Muna Obiekwe, became “gay icons” following their performances in the movie.

After “Men In Love” came out, Dumelo said he’s not gay. In a 2010 interview, he explained that the movie showed homosexuality as caused by evil spirits.

He told GhanaCelebrities that; “Yes I did a movie in Lagos. It was a gay movie. In that movie, I was under a spell. My best friend put me under a demonic spell. He then abused me to satisfy his gay pleasures. When you watch that movie, it actually doesn’t promote homosexuality”.

“It regards homosexuality as an evil thing. At the end of the movie, I prayed and the demon just came out of me, then I apologised to my wife and family, so it doesn’t mean am gay. It was just to create awareness that people who are actually gay most likely are under demonic spells”, he is quoted to have continued.
