Flagbearer of the Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has described the current voters’ register spearheaded by the Jean Mensa’s Electoral Commission(EC) administration as one that lacks transparency.
He made this known in a press conference at the party headquarters on the integrity of Ghana’s voter register today, September 24, 2020.
According to him, too many issues have characterized the voter registration and exhibition exercises due to the EC’s poor management.
“We knew that the decision to extend the exhibition period to Sunday, 27 September 2020, vindicates the position of the NDC. We, however, think that the two-day extension is inadequate to address the magnitude of issues that we have discovered that needs to be resolved” the former President said.
Mr Mahama further said his party recommends that the EC, once again, begin a regular comprehensive and transparent dialogue with the political parties, through the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) as the country prepares for the upcoming elections.
He again called on the international community to as a matter of urgency intervene in the electoral processes in Ghana to avoid any chaotic drama among others.
Jane Naana’s voter ID was duplicated – Mahama
At the press briefing, Mahama indicated that the voter identification number of his running mate was found to have been duplicated when she went to check her registration details in the ongoing voter exhibition exercise.
“One of such cases involved my running mate Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang. She went to her centre to check her name, she sent somebody to check her name and they said she had to come herself because her number was duplicated, somebody else had the same number as her and so she had to come and collect the card and take it to the district office and to go and sort it out. And so, she had to drive from Komenda to Elmina where the district office is and at Elmina, they took the old card from her and destroyed it and replaced it with a new one” he said.
