NHIA to Begin Nationwide E-Renewal System in December

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) is set to commence the renewal and registration of member cards electronically by December 19.

The system, which begins in the Western Regional branch of the NHIA, would allow all subscribers to renew their membership via mobile phones.

According to the Authority, this would reduce queueing and delay which would ultimately improve the scheme’s efficiency.

Speaking at a stakeholder’s engagement which introduces the system, the Deputy Director of Corporate Affairs Directorate of NHIA, Mr. Oswald Essuah-Mensah explained that they were working hard to achieve Universal Health Care (UHC) and improve access to affordable and quality healthcare delivery for all.

He mentioned that the mobile renewal code; *929# would be available by December 19, 2018 for clients to access and renew their membership card across all networks in the Ghana.

“The NHIA would from time to time prompt scheme users electronically as their policy nears expiration for quick renewal to avoid being affected by the one month penalty of waiting to register on same date of expiration.

“The Service would charge a one cedi convenience fee to be deducted from the accounts of clients in addition to the total amount for renewal of membership card,” he disclosed.

Mr. Essuah-Mensah called on the media and stakeholders to act as watchdogs by educating the public to understand the essence of mobile renewal of membership card which is fast, quick and accessible to do electronically.

In October, the CEO of the National Health Insurance Authority, Dr. Samuel Annor, who spoke to the media, had said; “we had the option to either expand the number of offices we have or use technology to solve the problem; we opted for technology to solve the problem after looking at the cost implication. The e-renewal project which would be launched in the middle of December has already been piloted in two regions, and working effectively.”
