A new region, the North East Region has been born after receiving an overwhelming 99.67% endorsement from the six districts that voted.
A total of 205,121 voted YES in favour of the new North East region while 447 voted NO.
Out of the total votes of 205,804, 236 votes were rejected and 205,568 were valid votes.
According to the Regional Electoral Commission Returning Officer, Mr. John Mensah , for a referendum on a region to hold, chapter 2 article 5 clause 6 of the 1992 constitution required that 50 percent of the registered voters should turn up to vote.
He said 80 percent of the ballots cast must be in favor of the creation of the new region.
Mr. John Mensah therefore declared that the North-Region has secured the required percentage to be more than the 80 percent and that the area is eligible for the North-East Region(NER).
The North-East referendum was collated at Gambaga in the East Mamprusi district.
Meanwhile, the regional collation of the proposed Savanna region is yet to start at time of filing this report.
A breakdown of the two districts collated so far under the proposed Savanna region are:
