Nothing wrong with Bawumia campaigning – Gideon Boako

Spokesperson for Ghana’s Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr Gideon Boako has disclosed that the Vice President of Ghana has never taken his leave since the party came to power.

There is word on the street that the Vice President is using his working hours to campaign to be the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) when there is work to be done.

But responding to this in an interview on Accra-based Peace FM, Dr Gideon Boako debunked the claim indicating that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign does not go against any law in the country and is not the first Vice President to campaign.

He indicated that the Vice President had anticipated times like these and did not take his leave ever since the New Patriotic Party came to power.

“If there is a law that says he should resign to contest an election, we will do that but there is no law to that effect. He is not the first Vice President to campaign for elections. Atta Mills was a Vice President when he contested, and Aliu Mahama was a Vice President when he contested. Even John Mahama was a President when he contested but that was not an issue.

If as a country we can enact laws like that going forward, that’s fine but until then, nothing stops the Vice President from campaigning. In fact, even the Ministers who resigned to contest for the flagbearership did that not because there is an existing law but because they needed time. I’ve heard some of them on social media complaining that Dr Bawumia is using working hours but that should not be an issue.

The good thing is that the President hasn’t taken his leave since 2017 so he has accumulated leave. He knew this day will come so he can use his accumulated leave to do the work which the law permits,” he said.
