ONE OF the notorious armed robbers, who have been terrorizing the people of Esaase and Bokankye communities, in the Ashanti region, has been killed.
Issah Wedam, described by the police as very deadly, was shot in the back by armed policemen when he attempted to escape from police arrest.
The suspected robber reportedly stunned policemen as he (Wedam) raced at top speed through the bush, even though his hands were in handcuffs.
The police therefore shot at him in the back to re-arrest him. He was rushed to the hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Charles Vivor, nicknamed ‘’Destiny’, an accomplice of Wedam, who was also at the scene but did not attempt to escape, is alive and is being held in police custody.
A police source, who demanded anonymity, said Vivor and Wedam are hardened robbers, who terrorized the people of Esaase and Bokankye, lately.
The source said the two suspects were arrested at their hideout at Owabi upon a tip-off around 6pm on March 9, this year.
The suspects, according to the source, admitted their involvement in recent robberies at Esaase and Bokankye, one of which led to the death of one, Kwabena Fosuhene.
The suspects reportedly told the police that they had hidden their weapons in a nearby bush, but Wedam attempted to escape after the weapons were retrieved.
The police source also disclosed that both Wedam and Vivor once jumped bail in a narcotic case at the Nkawie Circuit Court, and named other accomplices of the two as Kwaku, Appolor, Mmoyah, Azumah and Egollah, all of whom are being hunted by the police.
