Many have described as “a step in the right direction”, the announced decision by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that it has lifted the indefinite suspension slapped on one of its key leaders, Mr. Kwabena Agyei Agyapong some six years ago at a time he was General Secretary of the Party.
The lifting of the suspension automatically makes Mr. Agyepong a member of the National Council of the NPP, which is the second highest decision making body of the NPP.
A statement signed by the party’s current General Secretary, Mr. John Boadu said the decision to recall Kwabena Agyepong as a member of the party “was taken by the National Executive Committee after extensive deliberations following a letter written by Mr. Kwabena Agyepong to the Party, appealing to the National Executive Committee to recognize him as a former General Secretary after the expiration of his mandate as General Secretary on April 12, 2018.
“In arriving at the decision to lift Mr. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong’s suspension, the National Executive Committee, which was the body that suspended him based on the recommendations of the National Disciplinary Committee, took into cognizance, his conduct during the period of his suspension”, the statement added.
The National Executive Committee also accepted the recommendations of the National Disciplinary Committee to lift the suspension of the Constituency Women’s Organizer for Atiwa East, Gifty Sackey, who was suspended by the Eastern Regional Executive Committee of the Party.
Impliedly, Mr. Kwabena Agyepong would henceforth be accorded the requisite courtesies, privileges, and recognition as a former General Secretary of the NPP.
He himself had appealed the decision to suspend him and all through the period of suspension, continued to conduct himself with respect and worked selflessly to the benefit of the party.
Mr. Agyepong, during the 2020 general elections, was very vocal in campaigning for the party.
The New Publisher has gathered that at Monday’s NEC meeting, President Nana Akufo-Addo was very vocal in pleading with members present to lift the suspension because the party has punished Mr. Agyepong enough for whatever wrong he was suspended.
The President was said to have recounted several instances where Mr. Agyepong even during the suspension has defended the party and joined the campaign at every level from the constituency, through regional to national supporting with logistics, ideas and efforts.
Some 6 years ago, precisely on December 10, 2015 it was, the NPP’s NEC accepted recommendations by the party’s Disciplinary Committee to indefinitely suspended Mr. Agyepong as General Secretary of the party.
The Disciplinary Committee had found him guilty of violating Article 3(d) of the party’s constitution, which enjoins members to publicly uphold the decisions of the party, through various acts.
He was also accused of engaging in “unilateral actions and activities without consultation of, or authorization by the NEC.”
He was suspended alongside former National Chairman, Paul Afoko, and former National Vice Chairman of the party, Mr. Sammy Crabbe.
