The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has once again chided the debate challenge thrown by the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama ahead of the 2020 general elections.
This according to the National Organiser of the party, Sammy Awuku is a waste of time adding that, the party is yet to be fully convinced why the debate is necessary.
This comes after the former President in his four-day tour in the Ho West Municipality in the Volta Region on August 2020 said “In 2016, when I was talking about the value of infrastructure, my friends on the other side said, We don’t eat infrastructure, we don’t eat roads. That was what they said but today, I can see a scramble to grab even KVIPs and any infrastructure and tout it as an achievement.”
“…It’s easy to settle the issue of infrastructure, After all, the President said this election is going to be an election of track records; comparing his track records to my track records. We can settle it easily: Let’s have a debate between the two of us. Let Nana Akufo-Addo come and sit down, let me sit down and let’s debate our records. I am willing to present myself for a debate with President Nana Akufo-Addo any day, anytime, anywhere and we will settle the matter once and for all”, he noted.
But Sammy Awuku however responding to this in an interview on The Point of View show on Citi TV last Wednesday, said the NPP has not considered any decision to debate Mr Mahama.
“He [John Mahama] has his campaign plan and strategy, and we have our campaign and strategy. We have also brought forth our discussions which is leadership of service, protecting our progress and transforming Ghana for all. Unless what we have stated are not the fact but if we are to take Mr. Mahama’s words and say let’s go for debate; we know what they want to do. They want to set their own questions and try to answer themselves. Unless someone convinces me that the only way for us to have a proper discourse is when there is debate say for 90 minutes and then it is over. But let me say that so far we haven’t been convinced why there should be a debate,” he said.
