NPP Gov’t Holds Election Victory Thanksgiving Service

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has marked one year election victory with a national thanksgiving service to thank and appreciate God for the victory.

Hundreds of supporters and government officials swarmed the Accra International Conference Center (ICC) Thursday, to celebrate the goodness of the Lord.

The event was themed ‘Thanking the Lord who won the battle for Ghana.’

Then NPP presidential candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo pulled off a stunning upset when he won the 2016 presidential poll in the first round.

He was the first under the 4th Republic to unseat an incumbent president without a run-off.

Mr Akufo-Addo polled 5,697,093 representing 53.80 percent of total valid votes cast with the then President John Dramani Mahama polling 4,701,162, which represented 44.40 percent.

But Joy News had projected Mr Akufo-Addo as the winner of the poll before Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson, Charlotte Osei announced the final results.

“It is almost statistically impossible for President John Mahama to obtain 50 percent plus one required to win the presidential ballot,” Joy News’ Evans Mensah announced on December 9, 2017.

The then governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) had told Ghanaians it was cruising to another victory.

But after the results were declared, the “comfortable lead” that the NDC supposedly took had become just a funny slogan Ghanaians shared among themselves.

A year on

It has been a year since Ghanaians voted for the NPP to deliver on the promises it made on the campaign trail.

While the NDC believes its arch-political rival’s victory was merely based on luck and packaged lies, the NPP said its triumph was the doing of the Lord.

“53.80% in a tension-filled presidential poll as witnessed in 2016 is not a lotto number but Ghana’s victory over the NDC,” a key NPP supporter has said.

Surrounded by Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo and Second Lady Samira Bawumia, the president prayed for humility for his appointees in the discharge of their responsibilities.

Although the NPP’s first year in office has not been smooth sailing, president Akufo-Addo said his government will roll out a comprehensive strategy to address security and revamp the economy.
