NPP Gov’t Should Apologized over Poor Governance – Seth Terkper
Former Finance and Economic Planning Minister under the Mahama-led administration, Seth Terkper has criticized the performance of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, saying, he was expecting better and good governance of performance.
He admitted that “every economy faces challenges but I expected them to do more. I was expecting something better than what we are seeing currently”.
Mr. Terkper gave the criticisms on TV3’s New Day on Thursday which was
“Some of their [NPP government] programmes were over ambitious but I expected the economy to perform better”, he added.
Mr. Terkper’s assessment of the economy is at variance with the finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta’s who has argued that the country’s economy is “on course” despite the recent depreciation of the cedi to the dollar.
The former Finance Minister explained that “we are getting additional crude oil and they had additional resources. The energy sector debt service has been resolved so with these resources and others…it [economy] should have been better”.
On the government’s introduction of the Free Senior High School programme, Mr. Terkper said “don’t include those who can afford education into the programme”.
On the matter of debt left behind by the NDC, Mr. Terkper made mention of the massive infrastructure carried out by the NDC to say that some of the debts had served a good purpose.
On arrears left behind, he disagreed with the figure of 7 billion cedis that had been put out, saying the real arrears in place if properly analyzed were a little over 2 billion cedis.
“Put resources into education but why don’t you exclude those who are capable”, he quarried.
