NPP-USA says the NDC’s shifting stance on voters register worrying

The New Patriotic Party – USA (NPP-USA) has stated that the recent shift in stance by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) concerning Ghana’s electoral integrity and the alarming comments made by the party’s flag-bearer, former President John Dramani Mahama is extremely worry.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, 17 September 2024, by the communications directorate of the NPP-USA, the NPP USA chapter observed that “in 2015, under the leadership of Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the NDC confidently endorsed the reliability and integrity of Ghana’s biometric voters register.

At that time, the party advocated for periodic reviews to maintain the register’s accuracy, a position that demonstrated a commitment to the credibility of our electoral system and the stability of our democracy.

“However, the NDC’s current demand for a forensic audit of the same voters’ register it once supported raises serious concerns. This sudden shift from a position of confidence to skepticism suggests potential internal apprehensions or fears. Such inconsistency undermines the NDC’s credibility and casts doubt on its current motivations.

“Furthermore, the NDC’s recent attacks on the Electoral Commission and their insinuations that any outcome short of their victory in the upcoming December elections could lead to chaos are deeply troubling. These statements are not only contradictory but also dangerous, as they risk inciting unrest and demonstrate a disregard for the peace and stability that our nation has diligently worked to maintain,” the NPP-USA statement read.

“Of particular concern are the recent comments made by former President John Mahama, which dangerously suggest a military intervention should the NDC fail to win the elections. At a recent rally, Mahama accused the current government of corruption and implied that a military coup would have been justified under the NDC’s leadership if similar issues had arisen. His remarks included:

“If all these corrupt acts happening under the NPP government had occurred under the NDC regime, the Military would have overthrown our government by now.”

“I’m telling you the truth! If this level of corruption and all the bad things we are seeing under the Bawumia/Akufo-Addo government had happened under the NDC, there would have been a coup d’état.”

“Mahama also criticized Chiefs and religious leaders for allegedly supporting the NPP government, accusing them of failing to hold the government accountable.

These statements are not only inflammatory but also undermine Ghana’s democratic principles. Advocating for military intervention is both reckless and irresponsible, and it disregards the progress our democracy has made. The NPP-USA firmly upholds the values of democracy and the rule of law, and we categorically reject any form of military subversion,” the statement further read.

The NPP-USA release urged “all Ghanaians to remain vigilant and critically evaluate the motives behind these shifting narratives and inflammatory statements from the NDC.”

“The welfare of our nation must take precedence over partisan interests, and we must collectively reject any attempts to disrupt our democratic process under the pretense of seeking electoral integrity.

“As we approach the December elections, let us continue to prioritize peace, stability, and democratic principles. It is essential that we hold all parties accountable for their actions and ensure that our electoral process remains free from threats and intimidation,” the statement concluded.
