NUGS Denies Comments On US-Ghana Military Deal
The National Union of Ghanaian Students (NUGS) has urged the public to disregard reports circulating on social media that it is against the Ghana-US defense cooperation agreement.
A statement issued and signed by Elisha Oheneba Essumang, President of NUGS, described the report as malicious.
It said there has never been any official decision from the National Executive Committee of NUGS that sought to comment on the controversial US/Ghana deal regarding a joint Military training in Ghana.
He mentioned that the statement circulating on social media was signed by an imposter touting himself as NUGS President.
“Secondly, the emergence of some miscreants under the Pseudonym of the largest and ultimate students group in Ghana, it is rather unfortunate that some faceless charlatans for reasons known to them decided to use NUGS tag to perpetuate such a scandalous and wicked lie at the expense of the over 4 million Ghana students,” he hinted.
According to him, it could be an orchestrated attempt by certain people within NUGS to get known by the government in order to climb to the leadership of NUGS.
He further indicated that the issue has been reported to the security agencies.
Meanwhile, Parliament has approved the controversial Ghana-US defense cooperation agreement which seeks to provide the United States access into the country to camp its military forces.
The approval was done on Friday, March 23, by only Majority Members of Parliament because the Minority staged a walkout during the debate on the Floor of the House.
Mr. Elisha Oheneba, has however restated the Unions belief in government and the military to handle the matter in the good interest of the country.
“It is an establish fact that the proposal for the deal was sent to Ghana’s Parliament for discussion and acceptance, and as Students and intellectuals we have firm believe in the Legislature for a thorough and strict discussion before such a deal was accepted and as such NUGS will be the least of entities to kick against any such laudable decision by Parliament in the good interest of Ghana,” the statement read.
