Stakeholders in education in the Obuasi Municipality have found a permanent solution to the perennial hurdle of printing mock exams papers to support candidates preparing for Basic Education Certificate Examination.
After series of deliberations between AngloGold Ashanti, the Obuasi Municipal Assembly and the Ghana Education Service, AngloGold Ashanti resolved to construct an examination printing center furnished with printers and other equipment.
With land support from the Obuasi Municipal Assembly, the examination printing center has been built which will enhance the integrity of the examination system and ease the pressure on the surrounding schools during printing of examination papers.
At a short ceremony to commission the project in the Obuasi Municipality, the Chief Executive for the Obuasi Municipal Assembly, Honorable Elijah Adansi-Bonah lauded AngloGold Ashanti for the project stating that it was the key missing ingredient in ensuring that students are adequately prepared for their BECE.
He said AngloGold Ashanti has continued to demonstrate its commitment towards improving the lives of the people within their operational areas. He intimated the numerous interventions rolled out by the company in their 10-year Socioeconomic development plan will boost the economy of Obuasi.
To keep the facility running, the MCE said the Assembly will make provisions in its annual budget for the purchasing of papers for the printing center. He also stated that, the Assembly will liaise with GES to get officials to manage the facility.
With similar project unveiled in the Obuasi East district a fortnight ago, Edmond Oduro Adjei, Community Relations Manager at AngloGold, stressed that the exam’s printing center is one of several initiatives AngloGold Ashanti is employing to empower the youth and improve quality education in Obuasi.
Constructed at the cost of Ghc 2,249,281, the printers installed at the facility could sort, arrange, print, and staple up to 100 pages per minute. Mr. Oduro Agyei was of the firm conviction that the printing center would ensure that the integrity of the examination system was well protected thereby reducing the chances of errors or discrepancies in the process.
He noted that, since the launch of the SEDP, AngloGold Ashanti has trained and equipped over 500 teachers with leadership skills and innovative ways to effectively deliver lessons in classrooms.
In addition, he said, AngloGold distributed over 100,000 copies of learning materials to basic schools to support teaching and learning.
George Alfred Koomson Obuasi Municipal District Director of Education praised AngloGold Ashanti for the plethora of educational initiatives highlighted in their 10-year SEDP.
He said efforts by AngloGold Ashanti to improve the quality of education in the Municipality have yielded positive results culminating in Obuasi churning out good BECE results.
“With the support from AngloGold Ashanti and our stakeholders, students from Obuasi have won Presidential awards in the last 3 years. We all need to rally behind AGA to continue to support all the sectors of the Obuasi economy”, he said.
