President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said: “it will NOT be under his presidency that same-sex marriage will be legalized in Ghana” it therefore comes as a surprise to many at the Jubilee House that there are rising calls on the President to repeat his position on the subject matter.
The New Publisher made checks from the seat of government on Tuesday about the continuous silence from the President over the raging conversation on LGBT+ and the paper was told that Ghana’s laws have not changed and the views of the President cannot contradict the laws of the land.
The paper was referred to an official statement issued by the Director of Communications, Mr. Eugene Arhin over this matter as far back as April 2018 when the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia alleged that the President was in support of same sex marriages.
“For the avoidance of doubt, President Akufo-Addo has NEVER stated anywhere that, under his presidency, ‘men will marry men, and women will marry women’
“Indeed, the President remains focused on delivering his mandate, and improving on the quality of lives of the Ghanaian people. IT WILL NOT BE UNDER HIS PRESIDENCE THAT SAME-SEX MARRIAGE WILL BE LEGALISED IN GHANA”, the statement noted.
I Again, Nana Addo delivered a speech to the 2018 Synod of the Global Evangelical Church where he stated categorically that he the legalization of same sex marriage was not on his agenda.
Asked a direct question by the Rt. Rev. Setorwu Kwadzo Ofori, on whether Ghana would bow to international pressure and change its laws on homosexuality, President Akufo-Addo said: “I do not hesitate to state openly that I am a Christian in politics, and will continue to be so, a politician who is deeply influenced by Christian values… let us join hands together and build the happy and prosperous Ghana we all want. It is well within our reach.
“And, let me assure that this Government has no plans to change the law on same-sex marriage. We have no authority, and we will not seek any authority to do so.”
Akufo-Addo told the gathering that: “the Church and the Government have to work together since we have the same aim. There should be no doubt in anybody’s mind that the men of God have the moral authority to hold the political leadership to scrutiny. It is important that we do not debase the principles we purport to uphold.”
