President Akufo Addo has disclosed that his flagship One Village One Dam project would commence this year.
He said the dams when completed, would make a big difference to the lives and the livelihoods of farmers.
Delivering the State of the Nation Address yesterday, he said government has already rehabilitated and brought back into use many of the little dams that had been abandoned.
“Our farmers can see that the government is putting resources to back up the usual words. The 50% subsidy on fertilizer, and the increase in the provision of extension services, are making a great difference to the performance of the country,” he mentioned.
President Akufo-Addo during the 2016 electioneering promised to establish a dam in villages in the three Northern regions of the country to boost agriculture via a well-planned irrigation policy.
He did state that a robust irrigation policy “one-village-one dam” will make Ghana crop all year round and eventually become a net exporter of most foodstuff.
However, this deliberate interventions by his government to help farmers, is paying off.
Planting of Food and Jobs
Touching on the Planting of Food and Jobs, President Akufo Addo disclosed that this year, some half a million farmers would be signed on the programme.
This would be an increase from the two hundred thousand farmers signed last year.
He explained that the success of the first year has encouraged government to increase the scope of the programme.
“Under the Planting for food and Jobs Scheme, we are witnessing a fresh interest in farming. The success of the first year has encouraged us to increase the scope of the programme,” he stressed.
