Traders in Nii Boiman New Market in the Okaikwei North Municipality in the Greater Accra Region wants an inclusion in the government’s developmental projects.
In the view of the traders, past and present governments have only paid lip service to their needs as a community.
Speaker after speaker who turned up at the Social Auditing Programme organized by ONMA’s National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) echoed what they described as the neglect by the government in all its development projects.
Madam Martha Ofori Boatemaa, the Market Queen insisting similar events in the past had not yielded any good fruits, catalogued the seeming neglect by the government since the inception of the Nii Boiman New Market years ago.
She stated that the traders in the market have not benefited from the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) some traders in others markets boast off.
Madam Boatemaa, stated that the roads leading to the market is in a very poor stage while there are no security men to protect the wares of the traders at night.
The Nii Boiman New Market Queen noted among others that the aged long problem of lack of reliable water supply for the traders is still an issue the traders are grappling with.
She said the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has failed to hnour its pledge of paying for the cost of refuse disposed-off by the traders adding that revenue task force come for their daily tolls and yet they do not benefit from the taxes they pay.
Ophelia Aryere, form the Department of Planning at the Assembly said plans for the provision of water and roads for the traders in the community are seriously underway.
She is sure the Assembly will fulfill its obligation in respect of the projects.
Mr. Rexford Frimpong, Special Assistant to the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) tasked the traders to come together as a group in order to access the MASCLOC Loans.
Mrs. Joana Amponsah Nkansah the Deputy Greater Accra Regional Director of NCCE tasked the traders to continue adhering to the COVID 19 protocols.
She tasked the traders to pay their taxes and daily tolls in order for the government to raise the necessary capital for the development projects.
Chairman for the occasion Nii Boi IV, Chief of Abeka urged the government to assist Abeka with every development it requires.
Mrs. Vivienne Achel the NCCE Municipal Director underscored the need for the event indicating that the vent serves as the platform for the citizens to hold duty bearers accountable.
She among others things stated that the social auditing programme is also a means to dialogue with the community.
The event saw the inauguration of a six-member committee tasked to oversee the progress of development projects to be embarked upon by the government through the Municipal Assembly.
