Yesterday, February 1, 2022, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey demonstrated his commitment to walk the talk when his brilliant ‘Operation Clean Your Frontage’ took off successfully despite pockets of resistant from persons and groups who were clearly seeking their personal interests as against the larger public interest.
We at The New Publisher warmly welcome the campaign and we are committed to support it to the best of our ability. Our only prayer is that this campaign, ‘Operation Clean Your Frontage’, should not be another nine day wonder soon to be forgotten just as we have abandoned several brilliant initiatives in the past years.
One key example that comes to mind is the Campaign for Greater Discipline initiative launched in August 2002 under the theme “Do the Right Thing”, by former Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama of blessed memory.
It was a campaign that focused on encouraging Ghanaians and persons living in Ghana to “Do the Right Thing” and be disciplined.
It encouraged a concerted and deliberate lifestyle of being disciplined in every sphere of our lives be it how to drive on our roads, our attitude towards being prompt and to stop considering lateness to events as a virtue, disciplined in our work places and of course in cleaning our homes and the frontage of our homes.
Brilliant as that campaign was, it ended up being one that attracted a great interest for a short while but was then forgotten in no time.
It is based on this example and several other instances that we, at The New Publisher, are somewhat anxious that unless a deliberate decision is taken and some genuine commitment and sacrifice made to support this campaign, it may be a flash in a pan.
Henry Quartey and his team at the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council mean very well for this country. They have resolved to implement unpopular but critically important policies and they deserve the support of every well meaning Ghanaian.
In simple clear and direct terms, parts of Accra are in a mess and people have just decided to have zero regards for the laws on sanitation.
It beats common sense that in this day and age, it should take a Regional Minister and his team to force right thinking adults to clean the frontage of their homes and work places.
We, at The New Publisher, can only support this campaign and hope it has come to stay while we urge the Minster and his team to let the law deal with persons who by their actions or inactions would become obstacles to the success of this campaign.
