Opuni Sues Lilwin
Demands GH¢ 5,000,000 Damages
Former Chief Executive of COCOBOD, Dr. Stephen Kwabena Opuni, has dragged popular actor cum musician Kwadwo Nkansah before an Accra High Court For libel.
According to him, he was defamed when the actor popularly known in showbiz as ‘Lilwin’ made some comments on a television program dubbed “Don’t Think Far News” over a court case in which Opuni and one Seidu Agongo together are allegedly facing 27 charges of causing financial loss to the state.
Aside Lilwin, the former COCOBOD boss has also sued Multimedia Group Limited and one Daniel Nii Odoi Tutuwani, a Producer of Adom TV.
In his latest suit, the plaintiff said the defendants deliberately made a video in which they showed millions of United States of America dollars packed in metal boxes which defendants claimed was found in his (Opuni’s) house when they knew very well that it was false on the March 24, 2018 edition of the Programme.
He said the defendants again deliberately caused the said broadcast and publication to be made at a prime time in Ghana to ensure that the broadcast and publication would be viewed nationwide and intended same to have maximum effect on its viewers in Ghana.
Lawyers of Dr. Opuni claim the actor among others said “…With the charges leveled against him, he will soon be convicted like Abuga Pele (who) spent some small amount of money and was convicted for 12 years. The 27 charges against Dr. Opuni will be very difficult to get away with and these charges might get him to serve a jail term of 300 years in prison or better still one million years…”
Dr. Opuni stated that per the comments, he comes across as a greedy, opportunist and dishonest person who has stolen at least $512,000 and used part to construct an obscure mansion to house his deceased mother.
He said the tomb was constructed by the mother’s family and the cost is nowhere near the cost of a luxurious building in the Trasacco area.
Dr. Opuni’s lawyers said their client has been seriously injured in his reputation and has been brought into public scandal, odium and contempt.
As a result, Dr. Opuni is aside cost for legal fees is demanding five million Ghana Cedis as exemplary damages as well as an injunction jointly or severally agonist the defendants.
The plaintiff is seeking a retraction and apology on six consecutive times on Ghana Television, TV3, Joy TV, Adom TV, a written publication on the website of Adom TV and Joy TV, together with four publications on the front and back pages of Daily Graphic newspapers for four consecutive weeks.
