Osei Kwame Despite… An Inspiration Worth Emulating

Philanthropist extraordinaire, Dr. Osei Kwame Despite, is beyond all doubt, a generational thinker and an uncommon achiever whose success story should qualify as an examinable subject in schools.

If not for anything his entrepreneur skills and business acumen are worth studying. It would make a lot more of sense to teach our youth how to be entrepreneurs in our local setting than to continue to teach our students to complete school and start to search for nonexistent white-collar jobs

Despite, despite our challenging situation, has worked hard to make a fortune from very simple things that were hitherto taken for granted.  His practical examples are worth studying and emulating.

His foresight and futuristic instincts to have predicted correctly that there was a crucial need to set up media houses that would operate mainly in local languages.

If it is true that a vibrant and free media is a pre-requisite for a thriving democracy such as Ghana, and it is also true that all surveys and research into television and radio listenership in the country shows that Akan-speaking stations are the most patronized, then Osei Kwame Despite should be celebrated for being a pioneer in private Akan radio in the country.

Information dissemination in our local languages is key and has been pivotal in getting a huge chunk of our people to understand governmental issues and to participate actively in our growing democracy.

In the absence of local language radio stations, our large section of citizens that do not understand the Queen’s language would have been left wanting.

It is also no secret that the Akan-speaking community is the largest in the country. Therefore, for Osei Kwame Despite to have even birthed the idea of setting up an Akan speaking station, Peace 104.3 FM and managing it to grow to become one of the biggest radio station in the country is no mean achievement and he should be greatly commended for that.

The same man also has Hello FM in Kumasi, Okay FM in Accra, Neat FM all speaking Akan and an Akan speaking television station, UTV.

The quantum of persons he has employed in these networks across the country alone is alarming and mind blowing.

Osei Kwame Despite, over the years, has distinguished himself as having the needs of the poor and needy at heart. It was therefore not surprising that on his recent birthday, the man decided to donate a complete ultra-modern building, fully equipped as a children’s hospital to government.

On same day, Osei Kwame Despite donated two other modern buildings, one in Tesano and one in the Ashanti region to be used as police stations.

This is a huge succor from Osei Kwame Despite and he deserves a huge commendation and an official one for that matter from government.
