The newly appointed coach of the Ghana national team, Otto Addo, has acknowledged the challenge of leaving his position as a talent coach at Borussia Dortmund to assume the role of Black Stars coach.
Confirmed on Friday with a 34-month contract starting officially in May 2024, the former Ghanaian international expressed gratitude to Borussia Dortmund for supporting his decision.
“It was not easy for me to make this decision, but I am very grateful and happy that those responsible at BVB are allowing me to take this step,” the 48-year-old said.
He emphasized the significance of being allowed to work with the Ghanaian Football Association alongside his duties at Dortmund, recognizing it as a special opportunity.
Addo conveyed his fondness for his colleagues, players, the club, and its supporters, indicating that he will miss them dearly.
“It is not a matter of course that I was allowed to work for the Ghanaian Football Association alongside my job in Dortmund. I really appreciate that! Borussia Dortmund will always be something special for me – I celebrated my greatest successes here as a player and also experienced an incredible amount as a coach.
“I will definitely miss my colleagues, the boys, the club and the fans”, he added.
Despite the emotional departure, Addo expressed joy in being entrusted with the head coach position for his national team, a role he previously held on an interim basis between March and December 2022. He reflected on his earlier experience, leading the team to the 2022 World Cup after defeating Nigeria in a qualification playoff, although their journey ended in the group stage with one win and two losses.
Looking ahead, Addo eagerly anticipates his first competitive assignment against Mali in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in June. He pledged to continue giving his all for Borussia Dortmund until the transition to his new role, emphasizing his commitment to the club even after his departure.
