Otto Addo Says Substitutes Led to Black Stars’ Win

Black Stars head coach Otto Addo praised the impact of the substitutes in Ghana’s 2-1 victory over Mali in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

During his post-game press conference, Addo highlighted the crucial roles played by Ernest Nuamah and Jordan Ayew, who scored the comeback goals after Ghana trailed at halftime.

Ayew, who entered the game in the 79th minute, netted the winning goal in the 94th minute, assisted by fellow substitute Abdul Fatawu Issahaku. Addo acknowledged their significant contributions to the team’s success.

“In the first 20 minutes, we struggled but in the second half we were better. It was even and at the end, our substitutes made the difference. Fatawu did great with his pressing late in the game. I think we did great in the conditions here.”

Abdul Mumin, Elisha Owusu and Ibrahim Sulemana also featured in the game as substitutes; Ghana play Central African Republic in Kumasi on Monday, June 10.

Black Stars win

The Black Stars ended their winless streak with a crucial 2-1 victory over Mali in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers at Stade du 26 Mars. Despite an early Mali lead from a deflected shot before halftime, Ghana responded strongly in the second half. Ernest Nuamah equalized in the 58th minute with a well-timed header.

The decisive moment came in stoppage time when substitute Jordan Ayew scored the winning goal.

This victory marks Ghana’s first win in eight games, revitalizing their World Cup qualifying campaign. Before this, their last victory was in November 2023 against Madagascar.

The team struggled in subsequent matches, including a loss to Comoros and a goalless draw against Namibia, followed by a winless run in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Interim coach Otto Addo, who faced challenges since taking over, finally secured this much-needed win. Ghana now sits second in Group I with six points, tied with Comoros. They will next face the Central African Republic at the Kumasi Baba Yara Stadium.
