Otumfuo Condemns KNUST Violence
THE ASANTEHENE, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has condemned the acts of vandalism that characterized the recent demonstration by students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi.
According to him, resorting to brutalities, destruction of properties and violence, is not the proper way for students to drum home their grievances.
Otunmfuo, who is the Chancellor of the KNUST, has therefore entreated students to always resort to dialogue and diplomacy to fight for their rights.
This was contained in a statement that was read on his behalf by the Bantamahene, Baffuor Owusu Amankwatia, who had led a retinue of chiefs to the campus on Tuesday to assess the level of destruction caused in the school by the students.
“We are here to assess the level of destruction that has taken place at the KNUST following riots by rampaging students of the university.
“Otumfuo is outside the country now and we are here so that we can properly brief him about what had transpired here”, Bantamahene said.
According to him, he was shocked at the level of destruction that the irate students had caused in the school’s campus on Monday.
“Never again”, the Bantamahene said to journalists, “should students embark on violent acts in order to drum home their grievances”.
The Bantamahene had since invited the feuding parties at KNUST to the Manhyia Palace to help find lasting peace to the impasse in the university.
