Otumfuo Kids Weep

Numerous emotional scenes were recorded in Kumasi on Monday when the children of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, openly cried during a special funeral durbar organized under the auspices of the Asantehene.

The King’s children, a boy and a girl, started to weep when Otumfuo fired series of gunshots through a thick forest behind the Manhyia Palace.

The Asante Monarch fired the symbolic gunshots to show that he and the entire Asanteman were mourning the late Asantehemaa, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II.

This prompted the children, especially, the female who is reported to have been named after late queen, to weep uncontrollably.

Otumfuo, who was dressed in the famous ‘Batakari Keseee’, after arriving at the durbar grounds, marched to a dais prepared for him at the right side of the park.

Also on the dais was the Asantehemaa, Nana Ama Konadu, who succeeded the deceased Asante Queen, Lady Julia, wife of the Asantehene and her two children.

At a point, the Asantehene, who was holding a special ancient gun, started making some traditional gestures to the Asantehemaa, Nana Ama Konadu. As he made the gestures, his daughter, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem, started to cry, igniting an emotional scene at the durbar.  Minutes later, the Asantehene’s son also started to shed tears.

Present at the durbar were President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Vice President Alhaji Dr. Bawumia and former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
