The General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God Church, Rev. Prof. Paul Frimpong-Manso has criticised the media for publishing “unfortunate” and “unverified” accusations of idolatry against its slain pastor Rev. Dr. David Nabegmado, made by his nephew, the suspect who stabbed him to death in church on Sunday, 30 December 2018.
The man, identified only as Francis, stabbed the head pastor of the Central Assemblies of God Church at Tema Community to death at his vestry as he prepared his sermon for the service.
The suspect and two other accomplices have been grabbed.
The motive behind the killing is not yet known. However, in a video circulating on social media, the suspect alleged that the deceased was involved in idolatry and responsible for several murders in their family. He, therefore, justified the killing of the pastor.
“A person who has come here to murder such an honourable man (deceased) is making unverified statements and that is what the media is talking about, that is what Facebook and others are spreading. We are not trying to destroy his hard-earned image but also destroying the name of the church,” Rev. Prof. Frimpong-Manso said at a meeting with church leaders and the family of the deceased on Monday.
According to him, the deceased is not engaged in any idolatry but was raised based on godly principles and virtues of the Assemblies of God Church.
“I want to say that David was never one of the fake prophets, he was never a charlatan. He was born and bred in the Assemblies of God Church.
“It is immoral, it is wrong, it is painful, it is destructive to destroy somebody’s hard-earned character when the children, wife and family are mourning him,” he noted.
Rev. Prof. Frimpong-Manso, therefore, urged the media “to grow” and desist from the publication of such sensitive, unverified materials which cause pain to the affected people.
