Parliament resumes June 11

The eighth Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana has announced the resumption of its third meeting of the fourth session on Tuesday, June 11, 2024.

The Speaker of Parliament,Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin made this known through a statement he signed and issued on Monday 27thMay,2024, validating the resumption date.The sitting will convene at 10:00 a.m. at Parliament House.

“Pursuant to Order 58 of the Standing Orders of the Parliament of Ghana,” the statement reads, “I, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament, hereby give notice that, the third meeting of the fourth session of the eighth parliament of the fourth Republic shall commence on Tuesday, the 11th day of June 2024 at ten o’clock in the forenoon at Parliament House, Accra.

Dated in the office of The Speaker of Parliament, Accra, Ghana, this 27th day of May 2024”, the statement read.

Parliament adjourned sine die on Friday, March 22,  just before the Easter break and did not resume until the the Majority Caucus in Parliament forced a recall for Friday, May 17.

The Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, stated that there were critical matters of urgent importance that should be addressed by Parliament, but communication with Speaker Bagbin for a recall of the House has been ignored.

Therefore, his Caucus was acting in good faith by invoking Article 112(3) in defense of Ghana’s democratic governance. Later, the recall was announced by the Speaker in a statement he issued and signed on May 10.

The Speaker’s statement summoned all Members of Parliament to resume on Friday, May 17, by 10:00 a.m. It explained that the recall was “pursuant to Article 112(3) of the Constitution of the Republic and Order 53(1) & (2) of the Standing Orders of Parliament.”

The recall on Friday, May 17, led to the approval of the US$150 million loan agreement between the government and the World Bank’s International Development Association.

The loan aims to bolster Accra’s economic resilience. Additionally, Parliament approved the appointments of 21 individuals to ministerial and deputy ministerial positions, including two new appointees to the Ministry of Finance.
