THE ASIWA District Police in the Ashanti Region are on the heels of three suspected illegal miners known in the local parlance as Galamseyers.
The trio was part of a five-man gang that was illegally mining for gold in the Sunsu River at Nsuaem Number Two in the Ashanti Region.
Some Good Samaritans in the community risked their lives to arrest two of the suspects and handed them to police on October 19.
The two apprehended suspects are Abuabakari Suadic, 23 and Bawa Dawuda, 20, a police report seen by the NEW PUBLISHER indicated.
However, three other suspects, who were very smart and slippery, managed to escape as they were able to flee from the crime scene on time.
The report said three community members, name withheld for security reasons, rushed to the river banks upon learning of Galamsey activity there.
“Acting on intelligence, they proceeded to the scene and met the suspects busily working with the chanfan machine on a floater on the said river.
“The suspects were numbering about five, but they managed to apprehend the two suspects and brought to Nsuaem police station suspects Abuabakari Suadic aged 23 and Bawa Dawuda aged 20.
“With the report that they had gathered intelligence to the effect that the aforementioned suspects were engaged in an illegal minning activities with their accomplices on the Sunsu river at Nsuaem No2”.
The police report said the runaway suspects are being chased by the police as the Divisional Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of Bekwai is probing the case further.
