THE ASHANTI Regional Police Command has denied plotting a strategy to intimidate members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kumasi.
According to the police, the recent swoop at Aboabo in the Asawase Constituency, where ten members of the NDC were arrested, was purely coincidental but not planned to frustrate the NDC.
The police has explained that they had information that some criminals were at the location then, and after the swoop it emerged all the arrested people were members of the NDC.
The Ashanti Regional Police Commander, COP Kwesi Mensah Duku, who made the explanation, said it was never the intention of the police to intimidate the NDC.
“The police was after three suspects and when we had information that they were at Aboabo, we stormed there and arrested all the ten people in a major swoop.
“Usually, when we are after criminals, we conduct swoops just as we did at Aboabo and later on we screened the people and nine of them were granted bail”, he said.
The police chief, who was speaking on radio, said one Awudu Sulley aka Scorpion, who was among the three people the police were chasing, was denied bail.
COP Kwesi Duku said it is unfortunate that some NDC members in Kumasi stormed the Suame Police Station to cause troubles in an attempt to set free the arrested people.
According to him, one Yakubu Tony Aidoo, who led the NDC members to invade the police station would be dealt with according to the law to serve as a deterrent to others.
“We shall deal with Yakubu Tony Aidoo and all the rest for illegally attacking the police station”, the police capo said, adding that lawlessness would not be tolerated in Kumasi.
