Police in the Northern Region are on a manhunt for some highway robbers, suspected to be behind the attack of the Deputy Education Minister,Dr. Osei Adutwum and his entourage on the Bolga-Kumasi highway.
The Minister and his group were heading to Kumasi from Bolga when the robbers numbering about seven and clad in military uniforms, shot into their car and other oncoming vehicles, taking passengers and drivers hostage near Sarikyikura.
Although the Minister and his entourage managed to escape unhurt, five travellers sustained gunshot wounds and are receiving treatment at the Tamale Teaching hospital.
The Public Relations Officer for the Northern Regional Police, DSP YussifTanko told Citi News that they have mounted a chase for the robbers.
“The robbers ran into the bush as soon as they saw the Police. Some two vehicles were targeted and one of them was a truck that was carrying some passengers from one market to Damango. The robbers numbering about seven broke into the vehicle, wounding five persons.
“They were taken to the Buipe hospital but the situation was such that they were referred to the Tamale Teaching Hospital. Deputy Minister for Education was also travelling from Bolga to Kumasi and his vehicle happened to be the first to get to the scene and so the robbers fired at the vehicle and the occupants including the Minister and his bodyguard escaped unhurt.”
