Police Investigate Alleged Student Brutalities
The Police Intelligence and Professional Standards Department (PIPS) has begun investigation into alleged savage beating of some students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) by police officers.
The officers had been captured on video footage brutalizing the students after arresting them for rioting and causing damage to vehicles at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
A press statement signed by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Juliana Obeng, the Ashanti Regional Public Relations Officer, said they found the conduct tasteless and unprofessional.
It added that the police administration would not shield anybody found to have acted wrongly in the discharge of their duties.
The statement appealed to the victims and those who witnessed the incident to assist in the investigation.
Some students from two halls of the university – Katanga and Unity, had clashed during the “LUV FM Old School’s Reunion” at the Baba Yara Stadium – hurling stones, blocked roads and damaged vehicles on Saturday, November 25, and the police had been sent in to restore calm.
