One highway robber, identified only as Ibrahim, was on Thursday shot dead, following a fierce gun battle between some armed robbers and the police at Kubi, along the Obuasi-Dunkwa Offin highway.
They were robbing motorists and passengers on the highway when a police patrol team was dispatched to the scene, according to the police, but before the patrol team could park their vehicle, the heavily armed robbers opened fire on them.
The Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Kwasi Mensah Duku, who was addressing the media, said the police were forced to fire back, and in the process, Ibrahim was shot in the leg, while his accomplices fled.
The police chief said the victim later died at the Obuasi Government Hospital, adding that the police managed to retrieve a face mask, 8BB and 7AA cartridges and some dried leaves, suspected to be Indian hemp, from the deceased.
DCOP Duku said the police, on Saturday arrested Issah Bukari, 25, and Iddrisu Bukari, 23, who are believed to be accomplices of Ibrahim.
He said the two would be paraded for identification on today.
