Police Suspects Arson in Education Office Fire
THE POLICE in Kumasi are not ruling out arson in the inferno that burnt essential items at the Ashanti Regional Education office on Sunday, it has emerged.
The fire, which started Sunday evening, destroyed several files containing vital information about the sector.
Other valuable items such as television sets, furniture and computers, were also gutted.
The fire is said to have started in the office of the Regional Education Director, Mary Owusu Achiaw, who was not around when the fire started.
Eye witnesses disclosed that they initially heard a deafening noise from the top of the storey-building before the fire started.
A police source said there were rumours to the effect that some people might have deliberately set the building on fire to destroy valuable documents. The source, however, added that it was too early to conclude that it was arson, and appealed to people with information about how the fire started to volunteer information to the police; assuring that the identities of such people would be shielded.
