Politics Not About Deceit – Bagbin
The Second Deputy Speaker of parliament, Alban Bagbin, has called on politicians to be truthful to the electorate in their quest to achieve political power.
He said lies will only lead to the downfall of politicians and therefore appealed to “all of us in politics to let truth prevail”.
“If you are leading people and the people don’t trust you, there is no way you can develop the people,” he added.
He noted that truth is now becoming a scarce commodity in Ghana politics hence people think politics is about deceit. “Politics is a service, politics is about the people, if you deceive the people and get power, it is like pregnancy, tomorrow, its the lies that will lead you to your downfall”.
He appealed to all politicians to let the truth prevail so that they will be trusted by their followers.
“Leaders themselves don’t produce, it’s the followers who work and who produce, and when the followers don’t trust you, you’ll not achieve much in your leadership,” he advised.
Mr Bagbin said these at a mini rally organised by the Asawase constituency branch of the NDC in the Ashanti region dubbed: “fire for fire”, on Saturday, 3 February 2018.
He further called on members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) not to be discouraged by the current internal wrangling in the party urging the supporters to give their maximum support to any person who will be elected as parliamentary candidate or presidential candidate for the party to achieve their goal of winning the 2020 general elections.
He said the current happening is a “family contest” and it should not discourage them.
“We want everybody onboard; we want everybody to show love, we want everybody to show loyalty to the NDC. Competition is the spirit of democracy,” he said.
“So, whenever there is competition, it’s a show of how competent or how better you are than your opponent. It is not time for war; it is not a time for insults. This is a time to show commitment to your vision. So, whatever is happening in the NDC should not discourage any person. It’s a family contest,” he stressed.
“We have one goal and that goal is that 2020 we must win the elections. We are not just going to show Nana in 2020, we are going to win the election to develop mother Ghana,” the Nadowli Kaleo MP said.
