Mohammed Polo didn’t mince words with his opinion in an interview with Rainbow sport, as he tagged Chris Hughton to be an ineptitude coach with the inability to produce quality players and football.
The former international Ghanaian player, bad-mouthed the current Black Star coach and called for his removal after the team’s disappointing no goal against Madagascar in the 2023 Africa Cup of nations qualifiers.
Sunday’s match was Hughton’s third game, and his tenure has yielded just one victory, which came against Angola in Kumasi with a last-minute goal from Antoine Semenyo. The remaining away matches resulted in disappointing draws.
Mohammed believes that there are local coaches who can outperform Hughton’s coaching skills. He argued that the 65-year-old coach should be replaced with a coach who understands the complexities of excellent football and can bring out the best in the players.
“In the local league, we have better coaches who play quality football and are far superior to Chris. We have witnessed the level of excellence they bring to their games and the caliber of players they develop. These coaches are unquestionably superior to the current coach of the Black Stars. We must dismiss him and appoint a better coach who understands excellent football.”
He suggested that Kasim Mingle of Bechem United and Michael Osei of Goldstars as suitable replacement for Chris Hughton.
“I want to emphasize that these coaches have played quality football and should be selected or appointed as the head coach of the national team,” Polo stated.
“The quality players we see in the local league are trained and nurtured by our local coaches. So, if these coaches are developing fantastic players and playing quality football, we should give them the job because they deserve it” he added.
He also strongly encouraged the leaders in the football industry to invest in the local leagues in order to develop more promising players.
“We need to invest in the local league because we have abandoned it. It is not too late for us to make a proper decision. We should not wait until we have wrecked everything before making changes. Player are developed in the local level rather than the national level. We have some time to address the concerns I have raised and we need to focus on the local football’s development.”
