Possibility to host major international competitions in Ghana high

Minister of Youth and Sports Mustapha Ussif has stated that the Ghana government is looking beyond hosting the 2023 African Games and it has plans of staging more international sporting competitions.

Next year’s African Games is to be held in August and it will be the 13th edition of the competition that is held every four years.

Athletes from 53 nations are expected to participate in the competition across several sporting disciplines.

Commenting on Ghana’s preparations for the Games, Mustapha Ussif indicated there were extensive plans to successfully host the Games and bid to host international competitions in the future.

“We (Ghana government) are looking beyond the Games where we have a center where we can host any international Games. The Commonwealth Games have never come to Africa. Is there an opportunity for us once we finish with this infrastructure to put in a bid in the near future for Commonwealth Games? It’s possible.”

An aquatics center and an indoor facility are under construction at Borteyman in Ghana’s capital, Accra for the African Games.

Ghana’s wish to host the Commonwealth Games will require a a lot to bring it to fruition especially since no African nation has hosted the Commonwealth Games.

The next edition is to be held in the state of Victoria in Australia in 2026.
