Scores of pregnant head porters, popularly known as ‘Kayayie’ in Kumasi, are appealing to government to make provisions to transport them to the Northern Region, where they say they hail from.
These head porters, who had travelled to Kumasi in search of greener pastures, insists the partial lockdown due to the deadly Covid-19, is making life extremely unbearable for them.
They explained that they carried loads on their heads before they get money to feed themselves but the partial lockdown has denied them that opportunity to make money.
Also, they said most of the pregnant ones among them are nearing their delivery period and with the lockdown in motion in Kumasi, they and their unborn babies would suffer a lot after delivery, hence their appeal to be made to return home.
Speaking on behalf of the pregnant head porters, Adiza Zongo Pioneer, President of the Kayayie Association of Ghana’ said her pregnant colleagues are in difficult times currently.
According to her, with the lockdown and its accompanied challenges, the pregnant head porters, especially those that are due for delivery in few days, would endure difficult times.
“I am appealing to government, which has shown considerable care towards us that this is the time we need them most”, Adiza Zongo Pioneer, told The New Publisher.
“Our sisters cannot afford to deliver in Kumasi under the circumstances we are in. At least we have families in the North and shelter that can take care of us and our babies so take us home.
“Please run tests on the pregnant head porters for Covid-19 and allow them to go back home if they are not found to be infected by the virus”, Adiza Zongo Pioneer, begged passionately.
She also used the opportunity to commend President Nana Akufo-Addo for his continual support for the head porters, adding that “Nana also deserves praise for managing the Covid-19 issue well”.
