PREMPEH COLLEGE in Kumasi has honoured former President John Agyekum Kufuor and Dr. Matthew Opoku Premoeh aka ‘Napo’, the Energy Minister.
The elite school named a new assembly hall in the school as ‘JA Kufuor Auditorium’ and renamed Hall 11 in the school as ‘Matthew Opoku Prempeh House’ on Saturday.
According to the school, they decided to honour Messrs Kufuor and Napo because of their long and dedicated services to the country and Prempeh College in particular.
“Kufuor’s name would forever be remembered at Prempeh College for being the first Amanfuor or old boy of this great academic institution to become Ghana’s president.
“Kufuor has brought respect and dignity to Prempeh College and Ghana witnessed massive transformation when he was president”, Snr Dr. Nana Awuah Abedimisa II, said.
About Napo, he said “His contribution to Prempeh College is enormous and significant and it is good that we honour him whilst he is alive with “Matthew Opoku Prempeh House”.
Nana Awuah Abedimisa II, recollected how Napo, as the Education Minister in 2019, worked tirelessly to give the entire Prempeh College a facelift that befits the school’s status.
According to him, facilities at Prempeh College were becoming dilapidated due to many years of lack of renovation, adding that Napo has done a yeoman’s job for Prempeh College.
The event was graced by Nana Owusu Afriyie, the Otumfuo Apagyahene, Ing Nana Poku Agyeman, Kumasi Urban Roads Director, Dr. Addo Kufuor, ex-Defense Minister
Asante Chiefs and other dignitaries.
Former President Kufuor, who was beaming, admonished students of Prempeh College to learn from his experience and become influential citizens in future.
According to him, Prempeh College offers the best training grounds for responsible and patriotic future leaders so the students should make good use of their stay in school.
Ex-President Kufuor recounted that he started from Prempeh College as a young boy and by dint of hard work, discipline and dedication, he has made it to the top in life now.
He said since he has been able to make it in life, certainly the current Prempeh College students could also rise to occupy responsible positions in life if they study hard.
On his part, Napo said it was a humbling experience for him to be honoured on the same day with his mentor, former President Kufuor, who has made a mark globally.
He said his direct paternal grandfather, the late Otumfuo Agyeman Prempeh II, built Prempeh College, saying that he felt so proud for being educated at Prempeh College.
Ing Nana Poku Agyeman, the Kumasi Urban Roads Director, who schooled at Achimota, donated Gh 10,000 to be used for the upkeep of the JA Kufuor Auditorium.
Meanwhile, Prempeh College, on the day, also honoured a former Headmaster of the school, Arthur Clark by naming House 10 after him for his dedicated services to the school.
