Prempeh College secured 99 points placing TI AMASS, the defending champions in the third position with 72 points and Opoku Ware School in the second position with 91 points.

A total of 36 High Schools participated in the contest which was jointly organized by the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Accra Brewery Limited (ABL) manufacturers of Beta Malt.

In the girls’ division, TI AMASS came first with 129 points, beating St. Louis Senior High School which occupied the second position with 119 points and Kumasi Girls Senior High School secured the third position with 83 points.

A 17-year-old female student of the Aduman Senior High School, Victoria Adu Anabel maintained her record of 27.5 meters high jump contest.

Speaking after the event, Director of Physical Education Unit at GES, Emmanuel Domenyah said the National Youth Authority (NYA) is providing a multipurpose sports complex in each of the ten regions as recreational centres for the Ghanaian youth.

He said the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the National Youth Authority (NYA) have inspected the project sites and the facilities will be commissioned by the third-quarter of 2019.

According to him, these are measures put in place by the Government to improve on college sports.

He indicated that there was an urgent need for support to help the GES organize regular quality based and keenly contested sports to unleash and develop the talents of the Ghanaian youth.

He called on corporate bodies to support the GES as being done by the Accra Brewery Limited (ABL).

He added that as part of Government’s commitment to improving college sports, an Inter-Ministerial committee to rebrand schools and colleges sports was recently inaugurated by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Isaac Asiamah of which the GES plays an active role.

Beta Malt, the headline sponsor of the contest said it has signed a three-year partnership with the GES to sponsor the annual event which is subject to extension.

The company has piloted the national partnership in the Ashanti and is hoping to replicate the same in the other regions of Ghana.

Beta Malt Brands Manager, Mrs. Portia Offei Asare said athletics was chosen because of the link the brand has with that category of sports.

She said the company was devoting a lot of financial commitment into the partnership and will do more in the future.

The stands of the Baba Yara Sports Stadium were filled up as continuing and past students of the participating schools trooped there to cheer up the contestants representing their respective schools.
